On May 6th, the ACC HAM's Society had the opportunity to tour the cancer of
MD Anderson. In addition to treating cancer patients, MD Anderson also
include over (8) medical schools in which student may earn degrees in the
following areas :

The goal of the tour was to introduce students to health care careers
other than the traditional nursing and those of the physician fields.
One of the first schools visited, was the School of Cytogenetic Technology. Health care professionals in this area contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients upon the analysis of that patient's DNA. DNA "markers" are observed before chemo or radiation treatment and then afterwards to determine further treatments or a change in treatment. |

Mr. Chu escorted the group throughout most of
the facilities including his Molecular Genetic Technology Lab which analysis
a patient's DNA material to help physicians determine a specific treatment
for his cancer patient. Mr. Chu also explained the processes for admissions to the schools and what the student should expect from their studies here. |

One of the more popular schools visited was the Histotechnology Center in which organs are analyzed for tumorous material to determine whether the operating physician has completed the removal of all cancerous material or not. If not, the technicians ate wired with radios to the physician to report their findings while the patient is still under anesthesia. If the technician's analysis are negative, then the physician must continue to remove additional areas of an affected organ. |

The tour also included the schools and departments of Clinical Laboratory
Science, Radiation Therapy and Diagnostic Imaging.
