In New Mexico

New Mexico Roadside Attractions : We see them everywhere and unfortunately for those who live around one or perhaps several, sometimes take it for granted.  However, for those on the road, it make a nice stop to visit or just to look at to take the monotony out of a long drive.  I started to collect pictures of the roadside attractions during my journeys.  Look for them the next time your on the road again.  Sometimes there is an interesting story behind them.  By the way, since our travels are now going beyond the great state of Texas, click on the links below for other States.

[Georgia]  [Tennessee]  [Texas]

Alamogordo, NM – HAM's Burial Site – In front of the Intl' Space Hall of Fame Museum by the flag poles.

The burial site of HAM, the world's first Astro-Chimp.  He was buried here after his death at the Washington DC Zoo.  Look for the flagpoles.

Alamogordo, NM – White Sands Natl' Monument – Off of Hwy 70 just southeast of town.

One of the few places in the U.S. where one can feel like they are in the middle of the Sahara desert.

Capitan, NM – Smokey the Bear's Grave Site – Off of Hwy 380 in the middle of town.

Visit the Smokey the Bear Historic Park and learn more about him, forest fires and the U.S. Forestry Service.

Carlsbad, NM – Carlsbad Caverns – Located 7 miles west of Hwy 62 on Park Rd. 7.

Just another big cave.  Actually closer to White's City.

Deming, NM - Rock Hound State Park – South on Hwy 11, then east on Rock Hound Rd.

It is the only state or national park in the U.S. where you are encouraged to take up to 15 pounds of rocks out.  Nice agate and Jaspers can be found here.

Fort Sumner, NM, – Billy the Kid's Grave Site – Just follow a dirt road behind the ruins of the old fort.

I guess the cage is so that his tombstone won't be stolen again.  Or did he really die in Granbury, TX?  The controversy continues....

Las Cruces, NM - The Big Road Runner - Off of I-10 heading to El Paso.

By the way, the huge road runner is made of junk!

Las Cruces, NM – The White Sands Missile Range Missile Park – Look for the exit sign off of Hwy 70 east of town.

If your into rockets!  And I don't mean those Estes model rockets.

Lincoln, NM – The McSween Store – Off of Hwy 380 in the middle of town.

This store and the owner is what caused the Lincoln County wars with the local ranchers and led to the killings which gave rise to Billy the Kid's fame!

Oscuro, NM - Three Rivers Petroglyphs - About 15 miles south of town off of Hwy 54.

Just lots of ancient Indian rock art pecked into the rock.  I never saw any rivers.

Roswell, NM - The UFO Research Library - Off of Hwy 285 in the middle of town.

The truth is here.  Come inside and see our aliens!

Silver City, NM – The Gila Cliff Dwellings – 30 miles north of town, on Why 15.  Careful, drive slow!

The Indians attempt at urban apartment life.  They gave it up and I don't blame them.

Silver City, NM – The Chino Open Pit Copper Mine – 15 miles east of town, off of Hwy 152.

It makes an interesting landscape with all the terraces.

Silver City, NM - The Hurley Smelter - 10 miles south of town, off of Hwy 180.

That copper is not going to refine itself.

Silver City, NM – The City of Rocks – Actually, in between Silver City and Deming off of Hwy 180.

Just a bunch of rock formations in which a little imagination can turn this area into a little city.  The famous toilet seat rock is here.

Socorro, NM – The Very Large Array – About 45 miles west of Socorro off of Hwy 60.

Remember the movie Contact with Jodie Foster?

Whites City, GA – The Million Dollar Museum – Corner of Hwy 62/180 and Park Rd. 7 in the middle of the strip mall of stores.

I hope you like to look at a lot of old junk/antiques.

Whites City, NM – The Gargoyle Motel – Across from the Million Dollar Museum.

Its now just a row of gift shops.  But wasn't it a scary place in that 1972 movie about those gargoyles living out in the desert.

More to come and send some of yours in …
